Gamefly, netflix, etc… Good or Bad?

Are online movie and game rental "things" worth getting? Everytime I check a website they only state the starting price.(like $9.99 for first month) Lets say I rent 3-10 movies a month, is it worth it? Or is it better to go to my local video store? Or 1-4 games a month, is it worth it? Do the movies and games come scratched often or rarely? What is the average price? Are there different plans you can get? What is the limit? Do I have to sign a contract? What about Late fees? And in your personal opinion is it worth having?

to sum up an answer to all your questions…

the price is based on how many games/videos you have out at a time. you can get as many as you want in a month, but for the basic charge ($9.99) you can only rent one at a time… then they send you another once they've received your return. hence, no late fees, since there are no "return by" dates. the more you have out at a time, the more you pay/month. there is no contract to sign, meaning you can cancel anytime.

the downside of most companies is that you cannot choose the exact movie you want, but you can only submit a list (of 10 or so) that you want to see and they will send you whatever is on your list that they have available when you make a return. however, Blockbuster is probably one of the best programs out there, seeing as how you can return the movies directly to the store and pick-up a new one there, instead of having to wait for a new one to mail out!

if you rent that many movies a month, I think it'd definitley be worth considering… if you're not happy, you can always cancel!

hope that helps!

Does Blockbuster online video rental utilize "throttling" like Netflix?

I've been using Netflix for a while now but I do notice that they utilize "throttling" – in order to meet "shipping demands" at the end of the month, those who have rented out LESS movies that month get priority for shipping. So say that I have have 12 movies delivered to me on the 20th and another guy has had 2 out. He and everyone else who has had less than 12 movies out will get priority for shipping. Personally, I think it's all a bunch of BS and Netflix utilizes it to limit the number of movies you can take out in a month so that you keep your membership longer.

So I was just wondering if Blockbuster has the same policy, because if they don't I might consider switching.
Yeah I wish we had Blockbusters around here but we don't. That would be great. We used to have them but a local rental chain of about 5-6 stores ran them out of town, lol. I thought it was good a while back but now, not so much.

I am a Blockbuster store manager. Blockbuster online does not practice throttling. Also, you will receive coupons for free in store rentals and you can turn in your online rentals in store for more free rentals at which point your queue is automatically freed and you will immediately be mailed the next movie on your list.

On-line dvd rentals, do you try to watch and return your movies and soon as possible to get your money's worth

I gave someone a gift subscription to an on-line dvd rental for 2 months, and he must have called the place complaining every single day if things did not go perfectly, then he would put everything off until he watched each movie as they came in so he could return them as fast as possible.

As for returning, he made his girlfriend go out of her way to mail the dvd's near her work because he thought they would get there faster.

Is this normal behavior?

Yes, it's normal for those of us who are tightwads. I don't get as carried away as your friend, but I do try to watch them as soon as possible (unless there's something on regular TV that I'd rather watch) and am eager to get them in the mail once I've watched them. Netflix picks up on this though, and if you're getting too many movies per month, they'll slow down your turnaround time (i.e. they'll mail out new movies the day AFTER they receive the old movie) to make it profitable for them.

Upconversion DVD player better than old DVD player to new Sony TV?

Sony manual says can hook up DVD players (480, 720, etc) to the component input. Does the UP-CONVERSION DVD player show better picture than the old 480 DVD player when playing rental DVD's?

NO…..they don't improve it much, IF at all…..

Save your money for an HD-DVD player like the Toshiba HDA2…

Those units IMPROVE the old DVDS……and you get HD too….
