Did we really love 80s metal that much?

The world has been going 80s retro mad for the past few years -why?

Time blurs and clouds our memories -and styles and objects which were ridiculed at the time are now ‘cool’. Acts from the 80s are beginning to reform and release new albums, proving they can show the youngsters how its done.

The thrash metal scene, which was prevalent during the 80s and peaked with the 1986 releases of Metallica’s ‘Master of puppets’ and Slayer’s ‘Reign in blood’ albums (let the flaming begin) has had a revival, with newer bands such as Municipal Waste and Evile flying the flag for thrash metal. The original thrash bands such as Exodus, Kreator and Testament are recieving the credit they deserve and have taken the time to give us more albums and tours. Iron Maiden returned to top form again, much like their 80s haydays and the Darkness shone the spotlight on glam rock. Anthrax brought back Joey Belladonna, only for him to leave again afew months later, with Anthrax then searching for yet another singer. Dave Mustaine called it a day on Megadeth due to a hand injury, only to recover and release new albums -expect another new one this year. Kreator spent the 90s moving away from the thrash sound they help develop with 1986’s ‘a pleasure to kill’, only to return to the well with 2001’s ‘Violent revolution’, 2005’s ‘Enemy of god’ and their recent effort ‘Hordes of chaos’ has seen the German group return to their glory days.

Thrash is again very much alive and well, but does this mean these bands will be chucked out into the cold for a resurgance in ‘britpop’ and 90s retro?

Lets hope this isnt the case.

After your 80s retro bags and converse trainers to fully get into the swing of the 80s? Go to Swank clothing.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Is there really a Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band?  Country and folk music in America are still very popular.  They go way back.  Many big time groups went on long tours.  Many lesser known groups still do quite well.  This article focuses on one of the best.

The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band began in 1966 in Long Beach, California.  Since that time there’s been some turnover in the band members.  Two have always remained.  It’s the guitarist Jeff Hanna and the drummer Jimmy Fadden.  They originally created the band in an effort to not have to work for a living.

In the early days The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band was a jug band.   Early jug bands were jazz bands who added the jug into which someone would blow as a novelty.  Jug bands in Memphis played the blues.  They used washboards for percussion.  A jug band made some appearances on the Andy Griffith Show.  Sheriff Taylor had a few run ins with this family.  Their episodes always included a short performance.

The first single for the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band was Buy for Me the Rain.  It was a top 40 hit.  Jack Benny, of all people, joined the band to play it, and they once performed the song with the Doors.  Talk about diverse.

The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band was a big time novelty act in 1968.  They performed a song in the 1969 musical western Paint Your Wagon.  They also were an opening act for Bill Cosby when he appeared at Carnegie Hall.  They joined a jam session with the great Dizzy Gillespie.

They switched to country and bluegrass in the 70’s.  They went to Nashville, Tennessee where they had some success including two Grammy nominations.  They also toured in Japan.  They headlined in front of 350,000 people at the Ozark Music Festival.

The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band kind of disappeared, but popped up now and then.  They performed on Saturday Night Live and returned to Nashville to record other songs and albums.  At this time they won two Grammy awards.
