I have been copying DVD rentals to VHS to watch later. The problem is, there sems to be some kind of gain control on the vcr. This is decreasing the impact of the movie soundtrack. When anything louder happens in the movie, the audio seems to drop.
I'm not expecting 5 channel surround or anything, I just want to know how to preserve the audio levels.

High quality tape and video recorder, you still will not get the DVD quality though. But a high end VCR and connectivity (gold connectors, HDMI cables) and at a very low speed will get you close.

I recently put wire in the blood series 3 on my dvd rental list for amazon. It displayed as two discs on the list but when the first was sent 2 discs arrived in a special double cardboard case in the usual envelope. I wondered what was going on but it turned out they sent both dvds when they said just the first had gone out and I only ended up using one rental for 2 discs. Was this just luck or does this usually happen with amazon rentals when renting boxsets because if so then it would definitly be worth doing again.

Blockbuster does the same IF the film/programme is a two disc version.However IF the series is something on the lines of say Rome (six discs) then you`ll get one at a time.

Sony manual says can hook up DVD players (480, 720, etc) to the component input. Does the UP-CONVERSION DVD player show better picture than the old 480 DVD player when playing rental DVD's?

NO…..they don't improve it much, IF at all…..

Save your money for an HD-DVD player like the Toshiba HDA2…

Those units IMPROVE the old DVDS……and you get HD too….
