Yes it is very good for gaming. My only suggestion would be that you bump the processor up to at least the E6700, other than that it is fine. Don't listen to people who tell you to get SLI, you have enough video card there. Also ignore anyone who tells you Alienware sucks.
Workstations aren't for gaming, they have a different type of video card, and you don't need 20 gigs of memory on a gaming machine.

Sorry you missed out.
Love the modern graphics though. We would have killed for that.
Game controller is way worse than in the old days.
However, from my understanding (I don't bother with this crap, I refer to my engineer sons), you should be able to make a respectable presentation of yourself with this hardware.
